Bull Boat Challenge
Team-activity event Bull Boat
We build these small boats with our guests split into teams. The freshly cut branches are trimmed to size. Then the wood is tied up so that the framework appears a bit like the shape of a basket. This construction is turning into a boat by covering it with a plastic sheet to make it water proof.
The history of the bull boats
The Native American tribes were hunter-gatherers who followed the buffalo herds on their way through the prairie. Made by covering a skeletal wooden frame with a buffalo hide, the bull boat was used for crossing rivers and fishing. The name ‘bull boat’ stems form the raw buffalo hides they are made with. Very similar boats are being used for fishing to this day in parts of Vietnam, Japan and Cambodia.
While the original technique of manufacturing the boats is shown ahead of the exercise, the team is free to develop and implement their own ideas. This way the result is a variety of creative designs.
Test ride
To find out if the bull boats are actually seaworthy, we are testing them on a lake. The teams may also make their own oars. Like in the past, covered branch forks could be used to paddle through the water.
Needless to say that each participant in the boat is equipped with a life vest. How about a rowing competition between the teams?
Team building
The common objective welds the team together and the work on the boat boosts the team spirit. Each team member contributes with their skills as much as they can. After all, they’ll all be in it together.
There is the option of having a coach present who can reflect on the team’s and the individuals’ performance. See 'further options'.
Weather protection
This team-building programme can be held outdoors in any weather without any difficulties. If you prefer to offer building the boats under shelter, there are mobile marquees available for hire.
